About the Scholarship

The Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) is a Central Government scholarship programme designed to provide financial support to the wards and widows of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), State and UT Police Personnel, and RPF/RPSF (Railway Protection Force) personnel who are pursuing first-year professional degree courses.

The scholarship was instituted to encourage higher technical and professional education among the dependants of personnel who serve or have served in India’s security forces.

The PMSS 2026-27 application portal on NSP (scholarships.gov.in) is open from 1 June 2026 to 31 October 2026.

Amount is credited annually in two instalments to the scholar’s Aadhaar-linked bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Eligibility

Criteria applicable to all three sub-schemes:

  1. Relationship: Must be ward (son/daughter) or widow of an eligible security personnel
  2. Status of Parent/Spouse: Deceased, disabled in service, or in-service (retired with disability counts too)
  3. Course: Studying in Year 1 of an approved professional course (not applicable for lateral entry or Year 2 onwards)
  4. Marks: Minimum 60% in Class 12 (or equivalent qualifying exam for diploma-to-degree transitions)
  5. Income: No income bar (but CAPF scholarship prioritises those who died in action)

Eligible professional courses:

  • BE / B.Tech / B.Arch
  • MBBS / BDS / BAMS / BHMS / BUMS
  • BEd / BSc (Nursing) / B.Pharma / BPT
  • B.Sc (Agriculture / Horticulture / Forestry / Veterinary)
  • LLB (only 5-year integrated programme — not 3-year standalone)
  • MBA and MCA (both eligible)
  • Integrated B.Tech + MBA, BCA + MCA, BBA + LLB, B.E + ME, etc.

Not eligible for: BA/B.Com/B.Sc standalone degrees (non-professional), distance or correspondence courses, online-only programmes.

Apply well before October — the NSP portal experiences extremely high traffic in the last two weeks before the deadline.

How to Apply on NSP

Apply at: scholarships.gov.in

  1. Visit scholarships.gov.in → Click “New Registration” (if first time) or login with your NSP credentials
  2. Complete One-Time Registration using your Aadhaar card and mobile number
  3. From the dashboard, go to “Application Form” for the academic year 2026-27
  4. Select the applicable PMSS sub-scheme (CAPF / State Police / RPF)
  5. Fill in personal details, parent’s service details, course and college information
  6. Upload required documents
  7. Submit for Institute Nodal Officer (INO) verification — your college/university must verify your application within the deadline

Required Documents

  • Aadhaar Card of applicant
  • Class 12 Marksheet (minimum 60%)
  • Bonafide Certificate from college for current academic year
  • Service/PPO Certificate — This is the most critical document. It must be issued by the parent’s department and confirms their service, death/disability in line of duty, rank, and date of retirement/death. Get this from the Kendriya Sainik Board / respective state police / RPF office.
  • Bank Account Details — Applicant’s account, Aadhaar-linked
  • Death/Disability Certificate (if applicable — for wards of deceased/disabled personnel)

Renewal

  • PMSS is renewed annually for the duration of the course
  • Scholars must maintain a minimum of 50% marks in each academic year
  • Renewal application must be submitted on NSP each year within the renewal window
  • If marks fall below 50% in any year, the scholarship is suspended

Important Notes

  • Only one ward per family per year is eligible for this scholarship
  • If a student is already receiving another central government scholarship, they cannot receive PMSS simultaneously (no-duplication rule)
  • The scholarship applies only for studies within India — not for overseas programmes
  • The scholarship is only for first-year students (fresh admission) — not available for students already in Year 2 or beyond, except for lateral entry cases specified in the rules
